History of the Dachshund

Developed in the 15th century, the breed's name translates to "badger dog" in German, a testament to its original role as a fearless hunter; skilled at digging into burrows to pursue quarry such as badgers. Sometimes even following into holes and dragging out various sized varmits for hunters to dispatch! Dachshunds were prized for their versatility, often employed for various tasks including hunting small game and tracking wounded animals. Over time, they became beloved companions to families across Europe and beyond. Royalty, celebrities, and regular folk alike fell in love with the little dog with the big attitude.

During World War II, the Dachshund (along with other German breeds) experienced a drop in popularity due to propaganda depicting them unfavorably, associating them with the Nazis in cartoons and advertising and portraying them as symbols of aggression or disloyalty, even though there was no such connection. This propoganda caused a short drop in popularity...but not for long! Too many people saw the value and charm of this brave little breed, and soon they had made a smashing comeback.

Dachshunds also found their way into art and literature, immortalized by artists like Albrecht Dürer and authors such as E.B. White. Today, Dachshunds remain cherished pets worldwide, revered for their spirited personalities, loyalty, and distinctive appearance, serving as a testament to their enduring legacy.
